Ewa (Barbara Brylska), a young widow and artist, meets architect Adam (Jan Nowicki) at an art opening. Their passionate affair gradually develops into a relationship filled with shared walks, café visits, horse races, and motorboat rides. However, Ewa's jealousy and Adam's irritation lead to their first breakup. In the meantime, Ewa meets a student named Andrzej, while Adam experiences an accident in which his friend dies. The sense of loss brings them back together, though this time it is Adam who becomes possessive and restless. After a series of arguments and reconciliations, they decide to marry, but the happiness of their union remains uncertain.
