Pastor Hubina (Mieczysław Voit) leads a quiet life among his family and parishioners, enjoying their respect. However, his wife Edyta (Barbara Horawianka) distances herself from the rural community and grows apart from her husband. The approaching temptation is symbolized by a snake – first in the grass, then as a child’s toy, and finally in the form of a visitor from the wider world. After a tragic accident claims the pastor’s young son, Edyta leaves for Prague, where she meets the pianist and reserve officer Adalbert von Kschitzky (Ignacy Gogolewski). She brings him home as their daughter’s music teacher. The three of them discuss love, fidelity, morality, and culture. Gradually, the political and philosophical fascinations of their guest come to light, and Edyta falls under his influence. The pastor asks him to leave, but his wife refuses to return. Hubina is left alone, like Job, facing his loss and shattered hopes.
