Brest, a border town between Poland and Belarus, is the site of a unique daily logistical operation. Every international train arriving here must change its track gauge—from the European standard of 1435 mm to the 1524 mm width used in the former USSR. The difference is the titular 89 mm. Behind each carriage, Belarusian workers precisely replace the wheels. The entire procedure is carried out using cranes—passengers do not have to leave the carriages. Through the windows, they watch the workers’ efficient job, take photos, and chat among themselves. Once the track change is completed, the train continues its journey, and the workers return to rest, waiting for the next train. For them, it is routine; for travelers, an intriguing spectacle and a reminder of how technology can overcome borders and differences in standards.
